Learning Observed
Ormiston ICON COLLABORATE.jpgWe have had a mathalicious two weeks! .  Aleesha, Ziell, Nishita & Shaval have participated in the Mathlympics iExperience which has involved a series of measurement challenges, a BreakOut code team problem solving task and the archery challenge in Week 5.  The mini-mathlympics iExperience enabled the girls to be curious as they explored the resources in the various mathlympics activities where they measured volume, capacity, distance, time and practiced setting up a calendar. They were encouraged to explore the different resources and see how they could build on their maths capability. They connected the knowledge that they already had about good ways to practise maths capability with the equipment and used it to make conclusions about what to do with the equipment.  In the BreakOut EDU activity they collaborated well and managed to crack some codes. It was great to observe how well the girls collaborated together with the new additions to their team and how they applied their prior knowledge to the bow and arrow design.  The girls were inspired by some videos before they began to draw their design and list the materials needed.  They built their design with materials making modifications as they went and practiced shooting before the final competition.  It was great to see Nishita really express herself in this challenge and to see Ziell fill in the gaps while Shaval was at OSC.  Ka pai to all 4 girls on their collaboration, now to make better use of our time in iExperience!

Next Learning Steps
  • Tell your family about how you improved your bow and arrow to make it shoot farther
  • Write a blog post to reflect on the learning especially what you’d do differently next time.
  • Practice measuring at home (eg. when cooking)
  • Try to improve your bow and arrow or make a new design- what makes it better?

Nishita's Nail Art Learning Story

Learner: Nishita
Learning Coach:            Date:
Learning Area:                                                Key Competency:
Learning Observed
Nishita chose to participate in an iExperience that involved using a cork tile, hammer, nails and thread to create an artwork. The aim of this artwork was to ‘Pay it Forward’. She needed to think about someone in their life who they could encourage by gifting them their cork tile. Nishita needed to plan out their design and colour choice based on the person she had in mind to receive her finished work (connected).
Nishita collaborated to help others overcome their challenges. She was the first to complete her work and was an excellent teacher when helping the other learners. Nishita extended her capabilities by safely using a hammer to put in the nails and showed  thought about how close/far apart each nail needed to be.

Next Learning Steps
  • Write a letter/postcard to the person who will be receiving the tile. Tell them about what the materials are and how it was made.

Nishita & Sara's Rugby Learning Story

Learners: Nishita & Sara
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 5.5.16
Learning Area: Physical Education
Key Competency: Participating and Contributing, Relating to Others
Learning Observed
For PE, LH1 learners were focussing on passing a rugby ball with the correct techniques. We focused on how to place our hands on the ball, how to position our arms and how to aim. The learners then needed to pair up and take turns to practice passing the ball through a hoop.
Samantha and Aditi collaborated with positive attitudes. They took some time to practise their techniques and support each other with reminders of what the success criteria were. They made an effort to ensure they weren’t rushing, and making sure that they were 100% comfortable with these skills before moving on to the next step of their capability (making the hoop a moving target by lifting it up and down).
Evidence of learning
Next Learning Steps
  • Remember that a rugby pass is across the body, starting from the hip farthest away from the target.
  • Practise passing through the hoop from a greater distance.

Fraction Narrative

Learner: Sereya, Nishita, Melissa    Learning Coach: Mr Hattie
Date: 30 March 2016
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 1 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
In Maths we are looking at finding fractions out of materials. Today we were focusing on quarters. Sereya, Nishita and Melissa had to make 4 even groups with the counters. We looked at a range of different amounts. There were many different levels of Capabilities when we broke off into groups. But Sereya, Nishita and Melissa did well to Collaborate and figure out how to solve the problems. They used equal sharing to arrange the counters into the correct amounts. I was very impressed with how well Sereya, Nishita and Melissa worked today, this has been something that we have been working on for a while and we have successfully achieved it.

Next Learning Steps
Sereya, Nishita and Melissa next learning steps are to:
  • Use skip counting to solve equal sharing.
  • Find basic fractions from a specific amount using imaging.
  • Order fractions with the same denominator.

Momo, Melissa & Nishita's Mars Rover Learning Story

Learners: Melissa, Momo & Nishita
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 07.03.16
Learning Area: iExperience - Space                Key Competency: Thinking
Learning Observed
The learners had six activities to choose from to extend their knowledge about Space. Melissa, Momo & Nishita chose to take part in one that required problem solving and thinking skills. They had the option to make either a Mars Rover or a Satellite and picked to do the Mars Rover. With the provided materials, Melissa, Momo & Nishita had to make a connection between their own version and the image that was shown on the screen. The girls showed curiosity by using the materials in specific ways and both tried to use as much detail as possible in their creation. They collaborated by sharing ideas and possible ways to overcome issues, ultimately being very pleased with their final product.

Aditi, Sameeha, Alysia, Nishita & Melissa's Connected Challenge Learning Story

Learners: Aditi, Sameeha, Alysia, Nishita & Melissa
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 5.2.16
Learning Area: iExperience - Relating to Others
Learning Observed
This term our focus is on how we can be connected citizens. To introduce this, the Learning Coaches set up a series of challenges for the learners to complete. Each challenge was worth a different amount of points and the teams had to work together to get the highest amount to win. One task was to get all team members to cross the ‘Nile River’ (the width of one netball court) using only three hoops.
Aditi, Sameeha, Alysia, Nishita & Melissa had to discuss ways to make this work before attempting it. They needed to think about how their words, actions, attitudes and ideas impacting the success of the team. Each learner was able to act in a collaborative way in order to achieve the joint goal of crossing the ‘river’. They were capable of devising a method to connect their strengths and remain safe from the Nile Crocodiles!
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Swap roles so other members of the team retrieve or replace the hoops.
  • Make a point to do some iDevelop learning with one of their team members and build this relationship.
